Immigrants and Health Care
With today being May Day, here in America there are rallies scheduled around the country in support for the rights of 12 million undocumented immigrants who come to the US looking for better opportunities. Many immigrants deal with low wages and poor workers' rights, along with a host of other issues.
However, an issue that usually goes under the radar is that of poor health care for immigrants held in US detention centers around the country. In 2006, the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General found serious health and safety concerns at immigrant detention facilities and that detainees' requests for medical attention were often ignored.
The National Immigrant Justice Center put out a video recently interviewing some detainees about the poor medical treatment they are receiving.
